Re-invigorating Science for Himalayas

KNOWLEDGE ACQUISTION ON LONG TERM ADAPTABILITY AND SUSTAINABILITY OF HIMALAYAS (KALASH)

The Need

Himalayan Eco-region is one of the major constituents of the environmental-climatic system of the Indian subcontinent, especially in context of food as well socio-ecological security in the region. It plays critical role in regulating the bio-geo-chemical cycles, however with changing weather patterns as well as the demography, Himalayan region is currently witnessing immense transformations making its natural systems fragile and vulnerable. It therefore becomes imperative to study in detail the dynamics of the several interacting systems of the eco-region and develop a comprehensive and scientific understanding of the overall environmental-climatic system of the region with an end-to-end workflow-based approach for long term sustenance of the eco-region.

Vision

To develop a comprehensive scientific understanding of Himalayan Eco-region by establishing the linkages, connecting the dots, and developing an end-to-end workflow for the environmental-climatic systems and build a practice of sustainable living for the entire region.

Mission

Build a Centre of Excellence with an end-to-end solutions approach by establishing the understanding and linkages between various components of the environmental (biotic and abiotic) as well as human systems of the region and provide the directions for future decisions on sustainable development of the region.
